Josephine Andrews, 97, of Carlton, died Thursday, December 13, 2012 in Inter-Faith Care Center, Carlton. She was born February 23, 1915 in Split Rock, Minnesota, the daughter of Joseph and Helen Obeidzinski. Jo was raised in Cloquet on a 20 acre farm across from Washington School. She attended parochial school and was the 8th grade Minnesota State Spelling Bee Champion.
After school she worked at Diamond Match. Following her marriage in 1934 to Harry Andrews, Jo and her husband owned and operated Harry’s Meats and Groceries in Cloquet.
Jo was a former member of St. Casimir’s Polish Church. She was a member of Sts. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church and St. Casimir’s Guild. Jo was a member of the morning senior swimmers and led the exercises for the group. She also enjoyed bowling, playing cards with friends, sewing, knitting, crocheting, riding horseback with her husband, reading, cooking and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, and eight brothers and sisters, John Obeidzinski, Anthony Obeidzinski, Helen Swanson, Eleanor Dietrich, Francis Minkkinen, Frank Obeidzinski, Mary Obeidzinski, and Joseph Obeidzinski.
Jo is survived by three children, Jean (Bob) Port of Cloquet, Carlie (Jim) Nynas of Esko and Jack Andrews of Dallas, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; brother, Leonard Obeidzinski (Betty Hebert) of Carlton; sister, Ramona “LaLa”(Frank) Richter of Plymouth, Minnesota; life-long friend, Grace Otteson of Cloquet and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial Mass was held on Monday, December 17, 2012 in Sts. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church, Sawyer. Burial was in Old Calvary Cemetery, Cloquet.
