Leo Elmer Johnson, 95, of Cedar Valley, died Sunday, June 2, 2013 in his home with his loving wife by his side. He was born on May 17, 1918 in Cedar Valley, the son of John and Hilja Johnson. Leo married Elina Mattila on February 11, 1939 in Hibbing.
Through his life Leo was a logger, bus driver, dairy farmer, semi truck driver, a licensed boiler operator and welder, and an award winning buttermaker, winning the Minnesota State Fair Regional Championship in 1956. Leo was a member of Minnesota Buttermakers Association. He enjoyed walking in the woods, hunting, playing the piano and accordion, dancing, snowmobiling, and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three children, Shelley, Patricia, and Jack; two grandchildren, Heather and Jon Johnson; sisters, Toinie Skomars and Fay Dillon; and brothers, Ralph and Bruno Johnson.
Leo is survived by his wife, Elina of Cedar Valley; children, Ralph (Jeanette) of Floodwood, Warren (Bernice) of Floodwood, Leona (James) Emanuelson of Old Towne, FL, Daniel (Bonnie) of Meadowlands, Gloria Johnson of Appleton, WI, Mona (Richard) Koivisto of Pengilly, MN, John (Shirley) of Floodwood, Roy (Sue) of Floodwood, and Lisa (Larry) Anderson of Esko; 30 grandchildren; 51 great grandchildren; 27 great great grandchildren; and a sister, Effie (Roy) Jones of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.
Funeral Services were held on Thursday, June 6, 2013 in Cedar Valley Independent Apostolic Lutheran Church, Cedar Valley Road, Floodwood, MN. Burial was in Cedar Valley Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th Street, Cloquet.
