Earl Andrew Almquist

Rev. Earl Andrew Almquist, 82 of Cromwell died Monday, September 12, 2011 in Villa Vista Care Center. He was born Dec. 14, 1928 in Minneapolis to Theodore and Elsie Almquist. Earl was raised in rural Hennepin and Anoka counties. He graduated from Anoka High School in 1947. He was an Army veteran serving in Germany during the Korean Conflict. On Sept. 17, 1955 Earl married Marlene Bennethum in Columbia Heights. He worked various jobs until that one day in 1960 he received a letter from his mother speaking of him going into the ministry. He prayed about it and has never doubted he was called to preach. He received his Bachelor’s degree from St. Cloud State and his Bachelor’s in Divinity from Garrett. He was ordained in the United Methodist Church in 1964. He worked at various churches in Minnesota until retiring from the Deer River/Big Falls United Methodist Church in 1995. After his retirement, he served as a part time minister in Kerrick.
Earl loved to read and enjoyed working on the computer, writing poetry and woodworking.
Earl was preceded in death by one brother, Rev. George; and one brother-in-law, Gordon Negley.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marlene of Cromwell; two brothers, Rev. Robert (Sandy) of Barnum and Rev. Daniel (Maxine) of Sturgeon Lake; and one sister, Elizabeth Negley of Babbitt.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Sept. 16, 2011 in Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell. Burial was in Fridsborg Cemetery in East Bethel, Minn. on Saturday.
